SHILLONG: Annoyed with the haphazard dumping of soil by the workers of the Infra Project Pvt Ltd, the company involved in the construction of the Shillong by-pass on their cultivable land, the farmers of Diengpasoh, Thangshalai and Mawryngkneng have decided to send a petition to the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF), SC/ST Commission and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) New Delhi.

The decision was taken by the farmers at a meeting convened by the KSU Mawryngkneng Circle at Thangshalai, Mawryngkneng recently which was also attended by CSWO, President Agnes Kharshiing.

According to the farmers their production has suffered due to dumping of soil on their cultivable land all along the construction site.

‘‘Our total loss is around Rs 10 lakh,” a villager said.

In response the KSU Mawryngkneng Circle along with the CSWO has filed an FIR against the Company at the Mawryngkneng Out Post. Anisha Kharumnuid, of the Seng Longkmie, Diengpasoh alleged that due to the random dumping of soil, the PHE water source in the area has also dried up.

Meanwhile, president of the KSU, Mawryngkneng Wanlambok Kharsati said that they would meet the company officials to resolve the issue.

“For the time being we would not allow the construction of the Shillong By-Pass to go ahead until a solution is found,” Kharsati said.
