SHILLONG: To ensure proper disposal of garbage in Shillong and its outskirts as many as 49000 dustbins will be distributed in the non municipal areas of the city under the Asian Development Bank project by May next year. This was informed here on Friday by ADB Community Development Specialist, Paul Lokho.
The ADB, under the North East State Capital Cities Development Programme is implementing a programme on solid waste management while another programme on sewerage is yet to be implemented.
Lokho said that under the ADB project, 28,000 households in the city have already been given two colour-coded dustbins, green and blue, to segregate the wastes right at the source.
Reacting to a query, he said as far as the areas falling under the municipality are concerned, only   1200 dustbins are yet to be distributed.
Under the programme, distribution takes place right at the house and the success rate in June this year was 60 per cent, he said adding that that 31 out of 38 headmen in the city are successfully implementing the project.
When informed that the shopkeepers and commercial establishments in municipal areas are not using the colour-coded dustbins for segregation of waste, he said that shopkeepers and commercial establishments have to buy the dustbins on their own.
The locality task force in several localities and the Shillong Municipal Board has issued a directive to all the shopkeepers and commercial establishments    to use the colour coded dustbins by December 31.
