City residents question shortage despite assurance

SHILLONG: LPG consumers in the city have complained of non-supply of refill cylinders and at the same time have decried the ‘passing the buck’ attitude of the East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner who has put the onus on the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC).
The exasperated consumers have also flayed the stand of S. Chakma, Deputy Manager, (LPG-S), Shillong, who recently asserted that there was no shortage of LPG cylinders during the festive season.
While the East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner had admitted receiving some complaints on shortage of LPG, Chakma had categorically denied any shortage of LPG cylinders.
Residents of Greater Laban, Laitumkhrah, Greater Polo and Malki have reportedly not got their refill supply for the last 15 days despite the supply date being long overdue. Consumers from Hari Sabha, Last Stop and Rilbong areas of Greater Laban have complained that they have not got their quota of refill for nearly a month now.
Consumers have also stated that they have been forced to ask for refill cylinders from other families and neighbours who have lesser members.
Adding to the problem is the irregular supply of kerosene oil in the city by the authorities which has hit the consumers hard and has made it difficult for consumers to cope with the brutal winter days and the ongoing festivities.
LPG consumers from Laitumkhrah and Greater Malki observed that the former deputy commissioner had kept a strict vigil on such menace during his tenure but shortages in supply of LPG cylinder has once again returned to haunt the residents.
Meanwhile, LPG consumers of these localities alleged that their supplies might be diverted to the black market given the huge requirements by commercial establishments in view of the ongoing festive season.
They have demanded action against the errant gas agencies for not rendering adequate services and for harassing the consumers.
