SHILLONG: Department of Radiology & Imaging, NEIGRIHMS, Shillong conducted a first of its kind Live Interventional Neuroradiology Workshop & CME on December 20 in the entire North-Eastern region in this subject. Invited expert Prof. RV Phadke, HOD, Radiodiagnosis, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, UP is a pioneer in the field of Interventional Neuroradiology in the country with years of experience in the subject.
In this workshop, an 82 year old gentleman from Shillong suffering from decreased blood flow into the right half of brain due to a severe narrowing of his right carotid artery in the neck was also successfully treated with a stent. Another patient, a young boy form Shillong suffering repeated seizures due to a large Dural Arterio-Venous Fistula (DAVF) for more than five years was successfully treated by embolization, a procedure to close abnormal blood vessels through a small pinhole sized accesses in the neck and groin. DAVF is an extremely rare and dangerous condition, earlier thought incurable with devastating consequences including intracranial bleed resulting in death or severe debility.
The painstaking seven hour long procedure was accomplished by a team of Doctors led by Prof R.V. Phadke and Dr. Akash Handique along with Dr. Pranjal Phukan. The team included Dr. C Daniala, Dr. Baphira Wankhar, Dr. Kalyan Sarma, Dr. Sriparna Dhar, Dr. Nani Dolo, Dr. Ranjit Meher, Dr. Taraprasad Tripathy, Dr. Mukesh Sarma, Dr. P. Rajan and Dr. Chandralekha Baruah. Neurosurgeons Dr. Arindom Kakati and Dr. Bernard .T. Lyngdoh and CTVS surgeon Dr. Manuj Saikia provided necessary support and guidance in this extremely complex procedure.
The team of Anesthesia was led by Prof. Prithwish Bhattacharryya along with Dr. Ankita Barman, Dr. Raju Shakya, Dr. Anjum Goth and Mr. G Pardhan. Radiology Nursing and technical staff comprising of Rupak Dutta, Zhavino Yesa, Atul Lagun, Aditya Sood, Amit Singh, I. Shurchandra Singh, Clarity Kharkongor, Yashantis Hynniewta, Jacqueline Kharsahnoh, Ibadabet Nongrum, and B Ng Moyon provided necessary technical support. The boy’s treatment expenses were borne by Rastriya Arogya Nidhi Scheme under MOHFW and NEIGRIHMS under able leadership of Hon’ble Director Prof AG Ahangar and (MSW) in-charge Badrity Deingdoh.
