SHILLONG: Expressing satisfaction over the way JNNURM buses are being run across the city, the State Government has said that it has ordered 75 additional buses which will be incorporated into the SPTS bus service.
The SPTS bus service was launched in 2011 and initially the Meghalaya Transport Corporation was given the charge of plying these buses. However, unhappy with the MTC’s way of functioning, the Urban Affairs department later called for bidding and handed over the buses to different self help groups.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, Urban Affairs Principal Secretary, P Naik said that the buses are sustaining themselves and all operators are paying revenue to the State Government regularly. Stating that there is a scope for improvement of services, Naik rued that despite directions, conductors and drivers are not wearing uniforms.
As many as 85 buses are plying currently in the city and the State Government has ordered for 75 additional buses which will be incorporated into service.
“We will have to look at the routes when we put the new buses into service,” he said. The State Government is also constructing a control centre at the MUDA office which once made functional will collect real time information about the movement of buses.
