Rs 7.8 cr for foolproof security

SHILLONG:  The Centre has sanctioned Rs 7. 8 crore for purchasing equipment to ensure foolproof security during the upcoming South Asian Games in city.
With the blast at Williamnagar market on Saturday, the Centre wanted foolproof security in city thought the unrest was mainly in Garo Hills.
A senior government official said on Monday that there will be special security arrangements in city in view of the upcoming games.
Besides the meeting with the Joint Secretary Ministry of Home Affairs  Satyendra Garg on Friday last, the state government held separate internal meetings to discuss the security scenario chaired by Chief Secretary.
Besides India, the participating countries include Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Maldives.
Meghalaya was allotted additional five companies of central para military force for the smooth conduct of the games.
Besides, there will be deployment of CISF team for checking the access control system at the venues. In addition, the bomb disposal squad of National Security Guard will be stationed in city.
The state government will utilize Rs 7. 8 crore to purchase modern surveillance equipment including scanning and monitoring machines.
“We need to ensure close monitoring and watch of the venues to ensure that the events pass off peacefully”, the official added.
