SHILLONG: KHNAM Youth Wing president Thomas Passah on Tuesday demanded that the State government should initiate the State Youth Policy to curb the issue of unemployment in Meghalaya.
Addressing reporters here, Passah said the Policy was the need of the hour since unemployed youths constituted a considerable portion of the population in the State.
Passah said lack of commitment by the government on the said Policy was a matter of concern in view of the rising unemployment in the State coupled with a spurt in drug and alcohol addiction.
“For the National Youth Day to be meaningful, the chief minister should immediately address the issue of unemployment and initiate the policy,” he said.
Speaking of the military sector, he said this was an area where the youths of the State are least represented and asked the State government to pressurize the Central government to set up a separate regiment to generate employment opportunities for youths of the State in the Indian Army.
In a memorandum submitted to the chief minister, the party youth Wing called for creation of a Home and Hearth and Ecological Battalions for the youths to generate employment options.
