SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills district administration has targetted to complete the National Population Register (NPR) enrollment in the district by April this year.
Speaking to The Shillong Times here on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner PS Dkhar said that the   enrollment exercise was going on in rural areas.  “The teams will move to urban areas after completing enrollment in rural areas,” he said.
Stating that the task is challenging in rural areas since people are still not aware about the  NPR,  Dkhar informed around 10  to 12  percent of the population  of the district  minus the  urban areas so far had been enrolled.
It is fact that Enrolment of citizens under the National Population Register (NPR) is still making a slow progress in the State.
Earlier, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had stressed on the need to conduct an aggressive campaign on the implementation of National Population Register (NPR) in Meghalaya besides asking all the district administrations to prepare calendar well in advance to create sensitization among the people about the objectives of NPR.
It is said that NPR will be of great advantage for Meghalaya where there is a concern for illegal immigration and doubtful citizens since NPR provides the data of citizens which can be used to categorize people.
