4-day festivity begins amid tight security

 SHILLONG: The Durga puja celebrations in the State got off to a colourful start on Monday amid tight security arrangement put in place throughout the State by the Government.

“Security has been heightened for the four-day puja celebration throughout the State. We have made elaborate security arrangements for a peaceful celebration,” Chief Secretary WMS Pariat told reporters on Monday.

Taking into the account the prevailing law and order situation in Garo Hills, Pariat said that the Government has made special security arrangements for Garo Hills to prevent any untoward incident during the celebration.

The Chief Secretary also informed that the State Government has requisitioned additional forces to assist in the security arrangement during the celebration.

Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police AR Mawthoh informed that additional forces were deployed for security duty in and around the various puja pandals in the city.

Mawthoh informed that special patrol teams would also conduct patrolling duties in and around the city during the celebration.

He also said that police personnel on duty have been asked to keep an eye for abandoned objects, and inspect dustbins and motorbikes parked near the Puja pandals as preventive measures.

Mawthoh also informed that fire tenders, bomb disposal squads and other emergency facilities have also keep kept in full readiness to face any eventuality.

He also informed that fire tenders of the Indian Air Force and the Army have also been asked to remain on standby to tackle any untoward incident.
