SHILLONG: The formal surrender ceremony of the UALA militants, who had entered into official agreement with the government in December last, may take place within a week.
A senior government official said that while the construction of housing units to rehabilitate the UALA cadres, numbering less than 70, is going on in full swing on the premises of Baljek Airport near Tura, the formal surrender ceremony is expected within a week.
As per the Agreed Text of Settlement signed between the State government and UALA on December 18 last year, the cadres will abide by the ground rules framed for the conduct while staying in the designated camp.
As per the agreement, UALA will bring genuine cadres of the outfit at the designated camps along with weapons in their possessions and disband the organization.
The agreement said that UALA should declare the cadre strength with actual names, aliases, ranks in the organizations, year of recruitment and complete address.
The State government official said that though UALA ‘commander-in-chief’ Singbirth Marak alias Norrok X Momin was not present during the signing of the agreement, he would join the peace process during the official level surrender ceremony.
