3-day workshop on legal literacy begins

SHILLONG:  The need to spread legal literacy among the masses in the State was stressed during the three-day workshop which began here on Monday for the states of Meghalaya, Manipur and Nagaland as per the MoU signed between National Literacy Mission Ministry of Human Resource Developmet (NLMA) and Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice.
The State Resource Centre (SRC), NEHU, Shillong has organised the workshop to review information, education and communication (IEC) materials for Meghalaya, Manipur and Nagaland.
SRC is working for adult education and providing resource support to the state government in the literacy programme of NLMA called Saakshar Bharat in collaboration with National Literacy Mission Authority (MLMA), Ministry of Human Resource Development.
At the Inaugural programme held on Monday at Eldorado Guest House here, the chief guest, H. Nongkhlaw, president, Shillong Bar Association lauded the efforts of SRC, NEHU in organising the programme and especially in its efforts to create legal awareness to the masses through IEC materials.
Kuldeeep Kumar, Consultant, National Literacy Mission Authority, explained the objectives of the programme and said that the main factor that contributes to the lack of legal awareness is illiteracy.
He further said that legal literacy is an important component and it has been integrated in literacy programmes under the convergence mode.  The three- day workshop will include the participation of legal experts, language experts, local translators, artists, and others to review the materials so that they will suit local needs.  B.
