‘WGH, SGH have low female literacy rates in State’

SHILLONG: West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills districts of Meghalaya have been identified to have less female literacy rate.
Speaking to The Shillong Times on the status of literacy campaign in Meghalaya, B. Laltanpuia, Director in charge State Resource Centre (SRC), NEHU, informed that other districts of Meghalaya will be monitored as well.
“The Government of India has identified 410 low female literacy districts having less than 50 per cent of female literacy for implementation of Saakshar Bharat which focuses on adult female literacy (15 years and above),” he informed.
With an aim to spread legal literacy, the SRC reviewed booklets in Garo language of Meghalaya, besides other books in Manipuri language for Manipur and English language for Nagaland on 11 legislations ranging from the RTE Act 2009, government schemes, Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act 2013, etc.
The highlight of the programme was awareness for the people on their rights, Laltanpuia said, adding that knowledge of legal rights is a source of empowerment for the people and the masses become more brave and confident.
The thee-day workshop to review IEC (Information, Education and communication) materials on Legal Literacy for Meghalaya, Manipur and Nagaland concluded on Wednesday.
The chief guest at the valedictory function was W. Diengdoh, Member Secretary, State Legal Services Authority, Meghalaya. Rajesh Deoli, Project Manager, A2J, (NE & JK) and Anshul Saxena, Project Officer, A2J, (NE & JK) representatives from the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India were among the attendees.
