Rural to urban migration a result of State Govt’s lack of direction, party claims at public meeting

SHILLONG: Use of money power in elections and migration of people from rural areas to urban centres in the State formed the crux of the agenda of a public meeting conducted by the UDP at Lyngkhoi market in East Khasi Hills on Wednesday.
The public meeting was attended by UDP legislators Jemino Mawthoh, Titosstarwell Chyne, MDC Donkupar Sumer, ex-MLAs Bindo M Lanong and R.A. Lyngdoh, Braston Kharphuli, Wankupar Syiemlieh and Fedrick Lyngkhoi, who addressed the gathering and spoke on issues affecting the State.
The meeting centered on the grave effect money power has had on Meghalaya politics, thereby lowering the standard of legislators and district council members which in turn has led to the sad state of affairs that has direct bearing on the overall development of the State.
The meeting observed that agriculture, which is the mainstay of the rural areas, needs serious attention as it lacks the focus under the present government, resulting in the rural to urban migration, which has had severe impact in Shillong.
Absence of infrastructure, especially health and education, has been the main cause of migration and this is reflective of the lack of direction of the present regime.
The meeting noted that the recent High Court order that has affected the traditional institutions is a cause for worry as this has affected the grassroots system of governance which was in practice all along.
The meeting asked the people to wisely exercise their franchise in order to ensure a brighter future for the next generation.
