SHILLONG: Kynpham Sing Nongkynrih’s first book of drama in Khasi, “Ki Miet ka Jingtriem” (“Nights of Terror”) was released by Khasi Author Society president Prof. S. S. Majaw at a function held on Friday.

Speaking on the occasion, Majaw lauded the efforts of Nongkynrih, who, though a teacher of English Literature in NEHU, has been writing a number of well-received books in Khasi.

About the book, he said, it is a measure of its merits that it has been made into a film by State of Mind Productions, Shillong, headed by Kamki Diengdoh.

The author, Nongkynrih, explained the nature of the book in his speech.

He said the book is partly based on the Khasi story of the lame demon, U Suid Tynjang, but that it actually grapples with  contemporary issues including the accursed evil of superstitions and blind beliefs in nonexistent demons like thlen and its human killers, the so-called Nongshohnohs.

Besides this, he said, the book also highlights the potential destructiveness of wanton drunkenness,  at the same time celebrating the courage and enduring qualities of women in society.
