 Assault charge on Council member

TURA: GHADC NPP MDC from Raksamgre, Benedict R Marak has been accused by local residents of attempting to grab land belonging to the Leper Colony and severely assaulting a local elder in the process.
The Leper or the ‘Leprosy Colony’ as it is better known is situated on land bordering Lower Mission Compound locality across the Ringrey and the Gandrak streams where they converge to flow as one stream downwards.
According to the residents, the MDC had on February 10 taken several women ‘mondols’ of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and was engaged in taking measurements of land used by locals as a plantation when he was confronted by an elderly resident who objected to the goings on.
A heated argument reportedly ensued between the MDC and the local elder following which, the residents alleged the local elder was severely beaten up by the MDC.
The residents have condemned the actions of the MDC and a written complaint has also been submitted to GHADC CEM, Denang T Sangma with copies each to the NPP President, A’king Nokma and EM concerned.
A resolution to prevent such illegal acts in future was also taken in an emergency community meeting held on February 11 in which heads of all households in the locality attended.
