SHILLONG: A fresh investigation is in progress into the Shillong jailbreak case of 2009 masterminded by Fullmoon Dhar, whose killing raised suspicion of fake encounter.
West Jaintia Hills district police chief R Muthu said on Sunday that investigation was in full swing and the probe would be completed at the earliest.
Seven undertrial prisoners led by the hardcore criminal Dhar had escaped from the Shillong jail on May 31,2009.
After their escape, the police shot dead Dhar the next day in West Jaintia Hills and other six under trial prisoners were also re-captured.
Earlier, the petitioner Agnes Kharshiing who demanded fresh probe, gave her statements and also submitted documents to the investigation officer V. Upadhyay from West Jaintia Hills on February 9. .
“The documents are being examined by the investigation officer and the probe would not take much time”, Muthu said.
It was in June 2009 that Kharshiing had filed an FIR with the Jowai police station regarding the killing of Fullmoon Dhar who, according to the complaint, was alleged to have been caught alive but shot dead later.
Two Investigation Officers G U Wahlang then Circle Iinspector Khliehriat and Inspector D H Pde), who were entrusted with the investigation, closed the investigation and termed it as Final Report (FR) as they could not prove anything and stated that there was no evidence against the Jowai Police.
Kharshiing objected to this and sought the intervention of then Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) at Jowai to entrust the investigation to the CBI or any other independent investigating agency.
The CJM had entrusted the investigation to the SP West Jaintia Hills and according to Kharshiing,the then SP Hubert Lyngdoh did not do anything on the matter and then when the new SP R. Muthu took charge, the petitioner apprised the officer of the order of CJM and an Inspector was entrusted to take the statement of Kharshhiing.
The petitioner alleged that many times the notices from the court were never delivered by the Jowai Police to her residence which compelled her to write to the then Deputy Commissioner Jowai on such lapses.
One of the terms and conditions of the Jailbreak Commission was also to probe into the death of Dhar. The Commission, however , had ruled out fake encounter.
