Headman beaten to death

NONGSTOIN: In a late information received on Friday, one Nikolas Sangriang, headman of Porkhen village in West Khasi Hills was beaten to death by eight person of the same village on October 2 last.

Police have already arrested six of the accused – Tarsis Sanggriang (23), Rebinus Dkhar (23), Protasius Bula (24) Valentine Synshiang (24), Jeremia Sangriang and Ganesh Sangriang (23) – while two others were absconding.

According to police source, the eight accused, who are residents of the same village, asked the headman to release their MGNREGS daily wages, who informed them that the wages would be distributed after the Durga Puja since all the banks were closed.

The accused later held a meeting, wherein they accused the headman of withdrawing the money from the bank without informing the villagers. They then attacked the headman, who was present at the meeting, without any provocation.

Nikolas, who had suffered major injuries, was admitted to Riangdo CHC on Sunday and later was referred to Shillong but he died on reacing the capital city.

Police are making attempts to trace the two absconders.
