SHILLONG: Police on Tuesday seized a coal dump yard at Laitpynter under Mawngap outpost, away from the main road in East Khasi Hills after the matter was unearthed by the CSWO and members of Peoples’ Mission, a newly formed group.
However, in a statement issued to the media after the seizure of the coal, the East Khasi Hills Police said a suo-moto case was registered into the incident.
Police added that West Khasi Hills Police detained two coal trucks without coal challan at Jakrem under Mawkyrwat police leading to their seizure.
Police said after receiving information from South West Khasi Hills police, it was known that the coal was supposed to be dumped somewhere at Mawngap.
Earlier, the photographs of the dump yard were circulated by CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing who alleged that at a time when NGT had not allowed any unofficial coal dump yard, it was strange that coal was being dumped at a spot at Laitpynter.
The local NGT commissioner had rushed to the spot to assess the situation and to lodge a complaint.
The trucks which had dumped the coal had the registration numbers of ML0 5G4955, and ML05H7155.
According to handyman and a lady from the locality, the coal brought from Nongjri belonged to one Mahavir, CSWO said, while adding that the truck belonged to one Torian Langrin from Mawlai.
