SHILLONG: A day after the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma blamed the incompetence of Meghalaya Progressive Alliance ( MPA) for toppling the non- Congress government in 2009, the former Chief Minister Donkupar Roy, who was heading the MPA, said his ‘incompetent’ government ensured peace in the state and a corruption free governance unlike a ‘competent’ government under Sangma which is reeling under law and order problems and corruption.
“We lasted only one year as the MPA was toppled by Congress, but the people will judge and compare the good governance under MPA and the present messy state of affairs”, Roy said.
According to Roy, if his government had lasted the full five-year term, there would have been a lot of development in the state.
Roy said MPA achieved two objectives one is that the state should be peaceful and another is that Meghalaya should be free from corruption and this was achieved by MPA which is termed as incompetent by the Chief Minister.
“Those were the days when people could move freely as the state was free from militancy especially in Garo Hills. If the state was peaceful then, I wanted to know whether this was achieved due to incompetence of MPA”, Roy asked, while reminding the Mukul Sangma-led government that for development, peace is a necessity.
Reacting to the statement of Sangma that MPA had de-sanctioned many development schemes of PWD besides cancelling several power projects, Roy said that the MPA Government was compelled to de-sanction over hundred unrealistic PWD schemes as it was a big burden for the PWD to implement and it was based on the proposal of the PWD that the government de-sanctioned them .
On the cancellation of power projects by MPA, Roy pointed out that the agreement with the private power companies in 2007 was done in a hurry, even as he wanted to know the status of the power projects which have been pending for implementation.
