SHILLONG: Congress MDC Donevan Wanlang on Tuesday was elected unopposed as the new Deputy Chairman of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
Wanlang, who had just relinquished the post of an Executive Member holding the Land, Mines and Minerals portfolios, was declared elected as the deputy chairman by the council chairman Manstudy Nongrem in the House.
Wanlang succeeded Gabriel Wahlang who had resigned from the post to contest unsuccessfully the Nongstoin by-poll (Assembly seat) held in November last year.
The newly elected deputy chairman was escorted by the KHADC CEM PN Syiem, deputy CEM PT Sawkmie and EM in-charge Finance Neil Antonio War to the chair.
Later, expressing his gratitude to the members for his election to the Deputy Chairman’s post, he said that he would try to maintain the decorum of the House.
“I will cooperate with the Chairman and staff of the legislative to uphold the authority of the House,” the Sohra MDC said. While congratulating Wanlang, HSPDP MDC Pyniaid Sing Syiem, who is also a former deputy chairman, urged the new Deputy Chairman to be neutral while conducting the proceedings of the House.
Speaking during the felicitation ceremony, Syiem said, “We have full confidence that the new deputy chairman will conduct the proceedings of the House as per the rules of the district council.”
