SHILLONG: In a significant catch for the city police, four persons including two minors were arrested from Police Bazar on Monday while they were laying a trap in an attempt to rob unsuspecting people coming out of banks after making cash withdrawals.
East Khasi Hills SP M. Kharkrang informed that Bikash Kumar (20) of Katihar in Bihar; Amar Gowala (25) of Jalpaiguri in West Bengal and two minors from Siliguri were caught from Police Bazar, Shillong on Monday.
According to Kharkrang, their modus operandi is that they carry out surveillance of people who enter the banks for withdrawal. After the victim leaves the bank with the cash, they distract the person by throwing some dirt (mostly chewed moist biscuit) on the back of the person.
In the meanwhile, another gang member will offer water to clean up the clothes while another person will walk away with the money bag.
They were caught on Monday when they were targeting victims coming out of the SBI Evening Branch and United Bank of India, G.S. Road.
Police said the gang was involved in a number of such cases in 2014 and 2015.
