SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) Youth Wing has stressed on the need to religiously implement the Sexual Harassment of Women Employees at Workplaces Act as this act has not been made effective in some business establishments in the State. KHNAM members have also met East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner P.S. Dkhar and apprised him of the need to implement the Act in the right earnest. Speaking to reporters on Monday after meeting the district head, KHNAM youth wing president Thomas Passah aid, “The Central government framed the Act in 2013 but culprits take advantage of women in the absence of the Act here.”
“All districts of the State should have an Internal Complain Committee (ICC) as per the provisions of the Act,” Passah demanded.
The deputy commissioner is said to have assured the KHNAM members that he would examine the Act. On the incident where Abdul Mukit, owner of a garment shop at Police Bazar had allegedly sexually misbehaved with female workers in his shop after which KSU members had assaulted the shop owner, Passah said, “The NGOs are compelled to take things in their own way to teach any wrongdoer a lesson.”
He urged women working in private companies and shops to come forward and file reports against such harassment. The regional party has also directed shop owners in the city not to misbehave with women employees.
