SHILLONG: The plight of teachers who are additionally burdened with enumeration work for elections made its way to the Assembly on Monday.
Opposition members pointed out that very often the teachers have to engage themselves as enumerators whereas the school duty was put off.
Moving a cut motion against the proposal of Deputy Chief Minister in charge Elections, Rowell Lyngdoh, to appropriate around Rs 5.13 crore for the administration of elections, Titosstarwell Chyne (UDP) said unemployed youths should be entrusted with the enumeration work.
“Give the work of enumeration to the youth and engage them which will be a means of employment to them,” Chyne said.
To this, the deputy chief minister said he was unaware whether teachers were being engaged as enumerators in the field and that they were compelled to forego their school duties.
Chyne also said that doubtful citizens and foreigners should not be included in the electoral roll as this would lead to influx and immigration.
He said that steps and measures should be taken by the department concerned to ensure this.
“Continuous updating of the electoral roll should be done as the primary concern is to enroll Indian citizens,” said Witting Mawsor (HSPDP).
