SHILLONG: With the aim of maintaining proper records of government land, the State Revenue department has mulled training of officers and staff in the Land Administration department on surveys and fundamentals of revenue laws.
This was disclosed by Deputy Chief Minister in charge Revenue, R.C. Laloo, while replying to a motion moved by Titosstarwell Chyne (UDP) who said that there should be maintenance of proper records of government lands as advancement of technology has eased the maintenance of records.
“The government through various departments owns large areas of land spread all over the State which are administered by the concerned department under the general supervision and control of the GAD and Revenue departments and efforts are being made to keep accurate records of such lands by the Directorate of Land Records & Surveys with the participation of the concerned department,” Laloo said.
The minister, however, asserted that maintenance of proper records was an uphill task given the limited resources of the Directorate of Land Records and Surveys and the Revenue department, but steady progress was being made.
“Using modern technology survey have been completed by the General Administration Department (GAD) at Khliehriat, Cleve Colony, Risa Colony, Umpling (Revenue Block), Short Round Polo, Motinagar Ward and MUDA lands at New Shillong township, etc.,” Laloo informed.
He indicated that the government was conscious of the need to protect its land from encroachment and deems it a serious problem.
The Revenue department has been entrusted with the task of proper maintenance of the inter-state and international boundary records, Laloo said, while adding that no positive developments have taken place in view of the inter-state border tension with Assam. Maintenance of boundary pillars on the Indo-Bangladesh border has also been entrusted by the Government of India (Union Ministry of External Affairs) to the State government and the task is being jointly implemented by the Special Director, Land Records & Survey, Meghalaya, and Director General, Land Records and Survey, Bangladesh, the minister added.
