SHILLONG: The Joint Action Committee from Mawsynram on Friday asked the State Government to upgrade Mawsynram C&RD block into a civil sub division.
Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the chairman of the committee Rangsan Sohmat said that the committee is surprised over the fact that Government did not bother to upgrade Mawsynram into a civil sub division even though it is the second oldest block in the state established way back in 1950s.
Stating that Mawsynram has enough population as per the criteria required for creating a civil sub division,the chairman said that Mawsynram is around 150 kilometers from the state capital and students often face problems to come to Shillong for various educational needs .
He said that in 2012, the Joint Action Committee had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and also to the local MLA.
KHADC CEM P N Syiem from the Congress is currently representing Mawsynram.
The chairman said that the Joint Action Committee consists of Syiems, NGOs and headmen, and if the state government does not fulfill their demands, they would sit shortly to decide on the next course of action.
