Over 26,000 illegal migrants detected in State in 10 years

SHILLONG: A many as 26,426 illegal migrants were detected in the last 10 years in Meghalaya, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma informed the Assembly on Monday.
In a statement placed on the table of the House as part of the question related to the problem of influx, the Chief Minister said that a total of 1429 illegal migrants were deported and 1494 were prosecuted. Moreover, the total illegal migrants pushed back were 24932.
Sangma said that government has been making efforts to curb infiltration from across the International and inter-state borders.
He said to deal with the problem, the government has constituted two committees, one under Deputy Chief Minister in charge Law, Rowell Lyngdoh related to Meghalaya (Benami Transaction Prohibition) Act and another committee under senior police official SK Jain for setting up of facilitation centers at the entry and exit points.
The Chief Minister said that the state government has also set up 11 district task forces for detecting Bangladeshi nationals.
The creation of anti-infiltration directorate is another initiative of the government to check influx.
