SHILLONG: Police on Thursday recovered a cache of explosives materials following an encounter with the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants in West Khasi Hills district.
The exchange of fire occurred at Ringdigitam area under Shallang Police Station.
However, no one was injured in the encounter, even as the police have to hold back fire to prevent collateral damage to innocent civilians as the militants dragged the civilians along with them, Inspector General of Police (Operations), GHP Raju said.
Raju said the militants left away 45 gelatine sticks, 71 detonators, 3 meters CORDEX, one roll 6 MM electric wire & 19 truck keys has been recovered from the encounter site.
Militants dragged civilians along with them to prevent police from firing at them, he said adding that West Khasi Hills police have intensified their operations against GNLA militants who have shifted their base camp to Riangdim area to escape the police heat in Durama Hills region.
