SHILLONG: The State government is slated to kick start the Meghalaya Affordable Housing Scheme within this financial year.
Informing this here on Friday, Minister for Housing, Zenith Sangma, said the State government had made funds available for the scheme in the last financial year.
Stating that the government initially plans to build 10,000 houses in the State under the scheme by providing 25 per cent of the total cost of the house to the beneficiaries and also making provisions to provide government loans to the beneficiaries for the remaining 75 per cent.
Reacting to a query, he informed that nuts and bolts would not be used in making houses under the scheme to make them cost effective.
The scheme is meant for the economically weaker sections of the population and the scheme will be implemented in both rural and urban areas of the State, the minister said.
He further said that under the scheme, the government will provide necessary funds to the beneficiaries for constructing house in their own land.
The government might also consider the idea of constructing a cluster residential complex in Shillong, he added.
The proposed scheme is expected to be free of all deficiencies ailing the rural housing scheme.
