SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Indigenous Youth Federation (MIYF) has welcomed the State government’s move to ban liquor stores, bars and bars cum restaurants located within a distance 200 metres from educational institutions, religious places, hospitals and 100/50 metres from national and state highways.
However, the MIYF raised a concern as to the re-location of the liquor stores and bars stating that it is against the spirit of the order of both the Executive and Judiciary and renders the ban ineffective.
MIYF president A.K. Gashnga, in a statement, said alcoholism is a slow poison and added that the MIYF was ready to volunteer with the enforcement authority to check illegal sale and transportation of liquor.
The MIYF also asked the government not to worry over the loss in revenue and further demanded end to misuse/misappropriation of public money in various departments/agencies as reported by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).
