Street play to create awareness on child labour

 SHILLONG:With an aim to create awareness on child abuse and child labour, the North East Regional Domestic Workers’ Movement (NERDWM) presented a ‘Street Play’ at Motphran here on Monday.

The crowd in and around Motphran witnessed the talents of the children who presented the play displaying the fate of some under aged children who have to go out to work instead of enjoying their childhood like every other child.

The State Labour Commission distributed pamphlets to the people at Motphran highlighting some points relating to the Child Labour Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 and the punishment that goes along with the violation of this act.

 As per this act, the union government has strictly banned the employment of children under the age of 14 years in any factories, industries or restaurants in and around the city. Violation of the said act is subjected to 3 months in the prison which can also extend to a year along with a fine of Rs 10, 000.

Meanwhile, in relation to the Inter State Migrant Regulation of Employment and condition of Service) Act 1979, it was mentioned that it is compulsory for any contractor hiring more than 5 workers from outside the state to register under this act.
