New BSF IG visits border areas, reviews security

‘Operation Alert’ launched

SHILLONG: In the wake of the launch of ‘Operation Alert’, the new Inspector General, BSF Meghalaya Frontier, P K Dubey on Saturday carried out an extensive visit of the border and reviewed the border fencing and security scenario in the areas.
During the visit, the senior BSF official exhorted the jawans and officers to maintain vigil and ensure the security of the border population.
“Since Force Headquarters is taking care of the welfare of jawans, they in turn should take care of the borders,” he said.
The Inspector General also reviewed the status of border fencing, floodlights and border roads.
He was accompanied by Risal Singh DIG, sector HQ Shillong and S K Singh, Public Relations Officer, DIG (G).
As many as nine battalions of the BSF are deployed in the Meghalaya Frontier to guard 443 km of International Border with Bangladesh.
In view of increased sensitivity at the border, lot of force-multipliers like hand-held thermal-imagers, battlefield surveillance radar (BFSR) and night vision devices have been installed on border by the BSF to ensure “effective night domination”.
The troops on border have also been briefed to avoid predictable operations to maintain surprise.
The domination plans of the battalions have been reviewed and vulnerable areas have been identified and mobile check posts along with local police are being laid.  Besides, in order to seal the border, joint simultaneous co-ordination patrolling is being carried out along with its Bangladesh counterpart, the BGB.
The IG, BSF has also initiated various programmes in the border areas to develop strong bonding between the BSF and the people residing in such areas.
