KHADC-GHADC nominations

SHILLONG: Five months after the GHADC recommended the name of NPP leader Conrad Sangma as its nominee for the post of nominated member, the Governor is unable to decide on the matter since the State government has also recommended the name of Congress member Selma D Shira for the post.
Adding to the dilemma of the Governor is the case of the KHADC where the district council on December 14 last year recommended the name of retired KHADC Judge J. Reenbohn for the lone post of nominated MDC and the retaliation by the State government days later in recommending the name of Congress member Irene Lyngdoh for the post.
Both the KHADC and GHADC leadership have called on the Governor urging him to appoint their candidates, but their wait has only been prolonged.
As far as the GHADC is concerned, after the NPP led Garo Hills Progressive Alliance (GHPA) forwarded the name of Conrad  to the District Council Affairs department on November 3 last year for necessary approval, in a delayed tactic, the State cabinet on March 11 this year recommended the name of Congress member Selma for the nominated post.
When contacted, GHADC Chief Executive Member   Denang Sangma said the district council was still waiting for the approval of Conrad’s name by the Governor.
Since there was undue delay in giving approval to the name of Conrad, the GHADC CEM on March 16 had petitioned the Governor urging him to clear the name of Conrad citing rules.
According to the GHADC CEM, the power of nominating an MDC lies with the Governor which is required to be exercised on the advice of the district council and not on the advice of the council of ministers.
Sources said that since the Governor does not wish to be in controversy over the issue he is weighing all options before giving his final nod to the names of nominated members.
