SHILLONG: The controversy over the construction of the proposed four-lane highway in Ri-Bhoi has begun to take a serious turn with NGOs now targeting each other in an apparent bid to show their influence.

In a surprising incident on Monday night, Richard Kharphulli, office secretary of the Ri-Bhoi Students’ Union (RBSU) was allegedly assaulted by members of the KSU North Khasi Hills unit at Umsning.

Informing this, RBSU president Tyngshain Lapang informed that the KSU members had come in Bolero and assaulted Kharphulli while he was at one of his friend’s place. “We have filed an FIR at Umsning police station,” he said.

Lapang further informed that the KSU members had threatened him as well as RBSU vice president Kitboklang Ronghang for supporting the Government decision.

“We would file an FIR with the police in this connection on Tuesday,” Lapang informed.

The assault on the office secretary is seen as an outcome of the cold war between the student’s bodies which hold diverse stands on the construction of the four-lane highway.

The KSU North Khasi Hills, who is part of the JAC, is opposing the Government decision for constructing the four-lane highway through the existing Umsning road while the RBSU is supporting the Government decision.
