SHILLONG: The FKJGP on Thursday met KHADC CEM P.N. Syiem with a request not to give no objection certificate (NOC) to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) for the proposed rail project in the State.
The FKJGP also urged the KHADC chief to keep a tab on the increasing number of trading license being issued to traders by the district council.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, FKJGP general secretary Wilbert Rani maintained that   the organization was not against railway projects in the State and added that they had only urged the KHADC CEM to put on hold the NOC till the time a comprehensive mechanism to check influx of migrants is put in place.
“We are not against introduction of railway lines in the State but we propose that there should be a comprehensive mechanism to check influx. If railways are brought in without any mechanism to combat influx, the indigenous people will be in trouble and with the issue of border fencing pending, border checking is being done haphazardly which has intensified migration to the State,” he said.
With regards to trading licenses, the FKJGP urged the CEM to not issue trading licenses randomly without proper verification of the traders’ antecedents.
“We requested the CEM to give priority to locals for their employment,” Rani said.
He further said that the KHADC should revive the committee constituted earlier to check issuance of trading license by including members of various organisations.
