SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has demanded re-introduction of Khasi as a compulsory subject at the higher secondary level from the next academic session.
Speaking to reporters here on Monday, HYC general secretary Robertjune Kharjahrin said, “As per details obtained from an RTI application from the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) most of the students are not taking Khasi as a subject.
“Students taking up the subject in urban areas are very less as compared to students in rural areas. While in some schools in the urban areas, the percentage of students taking the subject is nil,” he said.
Kharjahrin also informed that MBOSE Executive Chairman E.P. Kharbhih has assured that an inquiry will be conducted to find out the reasons why students were not taking Khasi.
“The chairman has also assured us that our demands will be placed before the review committee and the government for consideration,” he added.
The HYC delegation also urged the MBOSE chairman to include Khasi history of the pre British era, British era, post British era and Independent India in the school syllabus.
“The Khasi patriotic song Ri Khasi should be taught and sung at least twice a week,” Kharjahrin said.
