SHILLONG: The National People Party is most likely to field former Union Minister of State, Rural Development Agatha Sangma for the   Tura bye-polls scheduled to be held on May16.
Sources from the NPP said that most probably, Agatha Sangma will be contesting the election.
However, sources said that the name of Agatha will be discussed in the   party   meeting  scheduled to be held   on April 22  after which name of the candidate will be  announced.
The bye-poll for the Tura parliamentary constituency is necessitated following the sudden demise of sitting MP Purno Sangma in New Delhi.
Earlier, the NPP had asserted that it would be a fitting honour to late Purno Sangma if the election went unopposed. But whatever decision  the Congress takes in its wisdom is its internal matter and party has nothing to say on it.
Agatha Sangma was elected as an MP from Tura in the year 2009  and in the 2014  elections,   Purno Sangma   again contested and successfully won the elections.
UDP decision: Meanwhile, UDP has decided not to field any   candidate for the upcoming Tura bye-polls scheduled to be held on May 16.
Informing this here on   Tuesday, the leader of Opposition and UDP chief Donkupar Roy  said that  his party will extend support to NPP candidate.
“We will soon have a meeting   in this regard,” he said
