SHILLONG: The Nongstoin-Mawthabah two-lane road project has divided people in West Khasi Hills, creating a division among those supporting the two lane project and others opposing it.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, a delegation of members opposing the road project consisting of members of Langrin Youth Welfare Association (LYWA), Phlang Mawphrah, Wahkaji, Umdohlun and Phlang Diloin demanded cancellation of the project.
Marking G. Lyngdoh, vice-president, LYWA, vehemently stated, “We do not need the two lane road. Instead the PWD should repair the Rangblang-Phlangdiloin road which is over 40 km long as this road will lead to Ranikor block.”
He claimed that there are only 10 households at Mawthabah.
However on being queried if the 10 households do not have the right to get good roads, he said, “Roads are the backbone of development but we do not need roads that lead upto Mawthabah as it will ease the mining of uranium.”
Dustarwell K.Lyngdoh, president, KSU, Umdohlun circle criticized the people supporting the road project and stated, “The people who support the road project are leaders of political parties. They are misleading the people by claiming to be from certain organizations.”
