Ex-NEHU professor to get prestigious award

SHILLONG: Asiatic Society, Kolkata will award Prof. J.B. Bhattacharjee, retired professor of NEHU and former Vice-Chancellor of Assam University, Silchar, with the Sir Jadunath Sarkar Gold Medal in appreciation of his important contribution to history.
Prof. Bhattacharjee began his teaching career as a lecturer at Government College, Jowai (now Kiang Nongbah Government College) in 1968, and joined the then newly founded NEHU in 1974 and retired from active service in 2006 as one of the senior most professors in the University.  He was the founder Vice-Chancellor of Assam University, Silchar (1994-1999) and served as short time visiting scholar from time to time in some Universities in the UK and USA.
He has authored 15 books, edited about 30 collections, contributed more than 300 research papers in journals and proceedings and supervised the research work of more than 50 scholars who were awarded M.Phil and Ph.D degrees. He presided over the modern India section of the Indian History Congress at Gorakhpur in 1989 and History and Culture section of the Indian Social Science Congress at Bangalore in 1991.
The retired professor is an honorific Fellow of the Institute of Historical Studies, Calcutta since 1991. The award ceremony will be held on May 2 at the Vidyasagar Hall of the Asiatic Society in Park Street, Kolkata.
