Shillong deserves a civil airport: DoNER Minister Jitendra Singh

SHILLONG: Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER)  Jitendra Singh promised to set up a medical college in Meghalaya in public-private- partnership (PPP) mode to cater to the needs of people from the North East for medical education.
In this regard, he informed that Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had discussed the matter with him last year.
“I have spoken to some private parties and we will take a decision shortly,” Singh said while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the launching of the ‘Pink Chain Cancer Campaign’ aimed at raising awareness about the disease and its prevention and cure at the North East Council (NEC) secretariat here on Saturday.
Singh also expressed concern over lack of proper connectivity in the Northeastern region saying that “Shillong deserves a civil airport”.
According to him, the Central government is aware of the connectivity problem of the region and added that lack of connectivity has created problems in carrying out the government programmes in the region.
“Shillong should have had a civil airport much earlier” he said adding that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre is working in tandem with the state government to pursue the project.”
“We have taken up the matter with the Civil Aviation Ministry and hope that the project will materialize shortly,” he said.
