SHILLONG: With memories of the earthquake on January 4 last and the recent temblor on April 13 still lingering in the minds of residents of the city and taking into account the safety aspects, the State government is proposing to clear all overhead electric and communication cables in the city under the Atal Mission For Rejuvenation And Urban Transformation (AMRUT).
Sources said that the Urban Affairs department basically wants to put all high tension wires underground and a proposal in this regard will be sent by the State government to the Centre under AMRUT.
Apart from earthquakes, the live wires over the head in the entire city poses tremendous risks for residents even during windy seasons and there are instances galore where  people have been electrocuted in different parts of the State.
Reacting to a query, sources also said there is a proposal to construct more leisure spaces in the city under the scheme since apart from Ward’s Lake and Lady Hydari Park, Shillong does not have any leisure facilities.
The Sources also spoke on the need to use technological means to ensure construction of safer houses and buildings.
Sources also asserted that there was a need to dispel myths about the do’s and don’ts during an earthquake since there is a lot of confusion on what is to be done during such emergencies.
