SHILLONG: To protest against the adamant attitude of the state government with regard to disbursement of salaries, the traffic volunteers of Mawryngkneng Out Post organised a two hour sit-in demonstration at Don Bosco Square here on Tuesday.

Around 10 traffic volunteers gathered at Don Bosco Square on Tuesday with banners saying ‘Release our salary because we need food to live and money to survive’ to protest the government’s failure to disburse their salary which is due for almost a year now.

Talking to reporters, one traffic volunteer from Mawryngkneng Out Post L Sari lamented that despite the hard work they put it there was no sign of compassion on the part of the government. “We have not got our salary for over a year now and we have to live on loans from other people which is very difficult for us”, he added.

It may be mentioned that the post of traffic volunteers was set up by the state government few years back as a casual post assuring that it will be turned into a permanent post. However, till date no sign of progress is seen in this sphere and these traffic volunteers are performing their duty without a penny in exchange.

Sari claimed that they had gone to the State Home Minister with the same request but to no avail. “We have no other choice but to hold this dharna and if still the government turns a deaf ear to our demands we will be forced to take up serious agitations”, said the affected volunteer.

The sit-in demonstration was supported by theKSU Mawryngkneng Circle who were also present during the demonstration. The organisation has also condemned the government in this regard.
