SHILLONG: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia Garo People, Mawlai circle met the Deputy Commissioner East Khasi Hills PS Dkhar on Wednesday, for his intervention to set up a public latrine and a dustbin outside FCI premises.
The delegation led by Marbud Dkhar, president FKJGP, Mawlai circle informed the DC that trucks parked in long queues has caused inconvenience to the public and defiled the nearby places by relieving themselves there as well as the places are indiscriminately strewn with huge amount of garbage, plastic waste, bottles and thrash.
Speaking to media persons, Dkhar said, “The federation visited the site today and we found numerous trucks stationed there on the roadside after unloading materials at FCI. It is appalling to uncover wastes in these areas and this necessitates the setting up of public toilets.”
“Moreover, the drivers and handyman also cook their dinner at the same place, and the residents of Mawlai find it appalling as with the presence of wastes, it will affect the health of the people at large,” he said.
As per the DC’s assurance, he will depute officers immediately who along with the residents and the organization will inspect the site to spot a location to construct public toilets.
“In our observation, we notice numerous trucks that do not even have sufficient parking space and the FCI does not even have adequate space,” Dkhar further said.
Ration pending
On the other hand, the poor residents of Mawlai have not received their quota of ration rice for the last two months, and in this connection the Federation enquired of the DC as to the non-release of the rice despite the wholesalers claimed that the stock of rice is full.
“According to the DC, the delay may be due to the implementation of the National Food Security Act. In the meantime, the DC will convene a meeting with the wholesalers in this regard,” Dkhar said.
The DC also informed them that the rice will be released in the month of May.
