SHILLONG: The East Jaiñtia National Council (EJNC)-Jalaphet Unit has criticized East Jaiñtia Examinary Army (EJEA) for allegedly demanding money from the headman of Jalaphet, East Jaiñtia Hills district.
EJNC president, E. Chyrmang, has expressed concern over the matter and cautioned other organizations from getting involved in extortion and disturbing peace .
Commenting on the extortion, Sambormi Lyngdoh, general secretary EJNC-Central Council, said that the NGT ban on coal mining has resulted in increasing extortion demands by various groups.
“The NGT ban has affected the people’s livelihood and this has given way for young people to indulge in extortion,” Lyngdoh said.
The EJNC wanted the govt to address the issue.
