SHILLONG: The Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) wants the State government to discuss and deliberate the contentious issue of holding municipal polls in Shillong.
Urban and Municipal Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Monday convened a meeting of the legislators falling under Municipal areas to discuss the implications of the Supreme Court order on holding municipal polls, but the Opposition legislators did not turn up for the meeting.
UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh said he had received the invitation for the meeting and added that since the notice was also sent to the SP and DC of East Khasi Hills it is evident that the government has already made up its mind to go ahead with the municipal polls.
“It seems the government is pre determined to hold the election and we were being called only to discuss the logistics for the polls,” he said.
The agenda of Monday’s meeting was to gauge the mood of the legislators and to get their feedback on matters related to holding the municipal polls so that the State government can file an appropriate affidavit before the High Court of Meghalaya where a PIL regarding the matter is pending.
The Urban Affairs minister is likely to call the meeting of legislators in the city again before filing the affidavit.
