SHILLONG: The State government has initiated a move to form the Fifth Pay Commission aimed at increasing the salary and other allowances of the government staff.
An official source said on Sunday that the Finance department has shortlisted a few names to select the chairperson and members of the pay commission for the final approval of the government.
The matter will be finalized by the State cabinet, the official added.
The plan to set up the fifth pay commission for the State government employees arose following the recommendation of the seventh central pay commission.
It was in September 2009 that the State cabinet had announced an overall pay hike of 32 per cent for all its employees, with retrospective effect from January 1, 2007 following the recommendation of the 4th pay commission headed by retired IAS official K.K. Sinha.
As per norm, every ten years, a new pay commission is instituted by the government.
Though the State government is reeling under financial constrains due to ban on coal mining which has crippled the State’s finances, there is demand from several quarters to constitute the new pay commission.
