Hima Mylliem resolved to clean up mess at traditional market
SHILLONG: A day after acting Syiem of Hima Mylliem, Ricky Nelson Syiem, conducted an inspection of Iewduh, vendors on Wednesday expressed stiff opposition to the attempt of the Hima Mylliem to re-organise the market.
The Seng Nong Iew Association (NIA) and hundreds of street vendors from Iewduh thronged the office of the Hima Mylliem on Wednesday to express their opposition to the proposed move.
According to Ricky Syiem, he had prescribed limits for the shops to not exceed the markings and encroach upon the open space, thereby sparing the people who throng the market from being congested.
“The Dorbar Hima Mylliem through the Executive Dorbar (ED) will continue its drive to streamline and tidy up the place despite the opposition,” Myntri in charge of Market, Chester Kharkongor, said while speaking to reporters on Wednesday.
NIA members and street vendors from Iewduh were adamant as Kharkongor revealed that the members do not want to diminish their shops’ structure despite the congestion giving a clear indication of non-compliance of the ED’s order.
“We understand their difficulties but we have to take into consideration the people who have to negotiate through the narrow winding lanes due to congestion as the open spaces are being occupied by stall owners who display their products irresponsibly obstructing the right of passage for passers-by,” Myntri Kharkongor said.
Myntri Jamphrang Nongkhlaw, who is in charge of Judiciary, said the drive will continue as the Hima intends to create open spaces and tidy up the market place and clean it off all filth and garbage.
He added that congestion often led to theft and molestation and at the same time it deters people from visiting Iewduh.
O the alleged practice of benami business, Myntri Nongkhlaw assured that necessary actions will be taken.
Myntri Kharkongor informed that the construction of a Gurudwara at ‘Them Metor’ was permitted by former Syiem, Latho Manik Syiem, without the consent and approval of the Dorbar of Hima Mylliem.
On the other hand, Myntri Nongkhlaw earnestly urged the different Church bodies to remove the signboard at Mawpat forest and to discuss the matter with the ED on May 13 at Dorbar Hima Mylliem, Mawkhar at 2 PM.
