Non-payment of post matric scholarships

SHILLONG: The Khasi Students’ Union has shot off a petition to Union Minister of Tribal Affairs Jual Oram complaining that Meghalaya Post-Matric Scholarship has not been disbursed since the academic year 2014-2015.
In a memorandum to the Union Minister, KSU’s Education Cell chairman, Donald Thabah stated that non disbursal of the scholarship has affected students coming from poor families who depend on the sum for their higher studies.
He said that the delay in disbursement of the scholarship resulted from the fact that the Ministry of Tribal Affairs had not sanctioned the required amount for 2014-15 till date to the Directorate of Higher and Technical Education.
While asking the Union Minister to release the scholarship from the academic year 2014-2015 till date as soon as possible, the KSU said that failure to provide scholarship to the students by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs was a gross assault on the rights of the pupils.
AG (Audit) urged to probe scholarship anomalies
Meanwhile, a conglomeration of NGOs has urged upon the Accountant General (Audit) to investigate into the instance of students in Meghalaya not receiving the Post Matric Scholarship under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
GSU, Khasi Hills zone, Maharashtra Achik Youth Association, All Guwahati Achik Students Association and other NGOs said in a memorandum to the Accountant General (Audit) that more than 50000 students had applied for the scholarship but only 3125 have been verified.
They also alleged that under the same scheme, students from Arunachal Pradesh have already received their scholarships while students from Meghalaya were yet to get the same.
“While students from Arunachal Pradesh have received Rs 67000 each, students from Meghalaya are   getting only Rs 8000, 6000, 11000 and Rs 2000 under the same scheme,” they claimed.
