NEW DELHI: As part of government’s drive to provide better security to the students from the North East, who have come under attack in the recent times, the Delhi Police has started recruiting boys and girls from the region. Over 435 boys and girls from the North East states have joined in the latest drive and are undergoing training, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs. Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju, who himself is from Arunachal Pradesh and Law graduate from Delhi University, reviewed the implementation of Bezbaruah Committee Report with the representatives from North Eastern states here earlier this week. During the meeting, it was emphasised that the local people need to be educated about the North East and its diverse culture and at the same time, there was a need for holding special classes in Hindi for the new recruits in Delhi Police. The Centre had formed an 11-member committee under the retired IAS MP Bezbaruah, following shocking attack and murder of 19-year-old Nido Tania at a South Delhi market in January 2014. The Committee’s recommendations called for new law against discrimination, fast track courts and special police squads, more space for North East in school curricula, awareness campaign and organising sporting events between people of different regions. The Minister expressed satisfaction on the steps being taken by different Ministries for the implementation of the report and recruitment by Delhi Police. The representatives of North East states in Delhi informed about the logistics, educational and other related issues of their people. The participants also discussed tourism promotion, cultural and tourism festivals in North East, films on the region, promotion of sports and infrastructural facilities, enhancing slot time for North East on Doordarshan, and hostel accommodation in the National Capital Region.
