SHILLONG: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) is of the opinion that update of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which is currently underway in Assam, should also be conducted in the entire Northeastern region with 1951 being the last updated year and 1971 being the base year.
NESO in an executive council meeting on Tuesday at Guwahati reiterated their demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the entire NE region, repeal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958 from the region, Special Education Policy for the region, Special Constitutional Status for the NE states with rights over land and natural resources, and check on illegal infiltration.
In a statement released to the press, it stated, “NESO urges upon the respective state governments and also the Central government to approach the Supreme Court so as to ensure that the students are not adversely affected by the recent orders of the Apex Court ordering for the all India Medical Entrance Test or National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET).”
The organization has resolved to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India through the Governor of various NE states within May 31.
A delegation will visit New Delhi to meet Central ministers and MPs of the region for solving the various pending issues.
