NONGSTOIN: Residents of Upper New Nongstoin are peeved at the erratic supply of electricity in the area for over a month now. Residents have said that the interrupted power supply has led to spurt in crimes in the area.
Last month in Upper New Nongstoin, thefts took place in two schools– Christ Disciple Secondary School and Church of God Secondary School, where burglars took away the admission fees of students as well as the question papers of Class IX and X.
In another incident on May 21, unknown miscreants broke into a shop in the area and lifted cigarettes and cold drinks. The owner of the shop, D. Marwein said that miscreants took advantage of the fact that there was no electricity throughout the night.
According to residents, the frequent power cuts, five to six times a day, has left them puzzled since there is no load shedding in nearby New Nongstoin.
“It’s really surprising that a place in a town area is not getting proper supply of electricity,” a resident, Kitkupar Lyngdoh said.
He added that whenever MeECL officials were contacted on the matter “false assurances” were given about some ongoing repair work to get the problem rectified. The residents also urged MeECL Nongstoin to improve the power supply.
It is also learnt that there have been 30 to 40 small theft cases in Nongstoin area and police are clueless about the identity of the miscreants.
